Subject: The destruction of the Canaanites: a moral problem?

The destruction of the Canaanites is probably the most difficult of the moral objections to the Old Testament raised today. This talk will first consider how the Bible itself explains the morality of the command to destroy the Canaanites. The second part will examine the assumptions that lie behind the moral objections raised today and show how countering these assumptions is essential to properly understand the gospel.

About the speaker

Dr Stephen Lloyd is pastor of Hope Baptist Church, Gravesend, and a part-time speaker and writer for Biblical Creation Ministeries. He gained his doctorate in Materials Science from Cambridge University, where he was also involved in post-doctoral research, including four years as a Royal Society University Research Fellow. Steve is married to Hannah and they have four young children.

On the third Sunday of every month we meet in the Church Hall for lunch following the morning service, all are welcome to join with us.

Dr. John Blanchard is an internationally known Christian preacher, teacher, apologist and author. He has written 30 books, including two of Britain’s most widely used evangelistic presentations, Right With God and the booklet Ultimate Questions. The latter has over fourteen million copies in print in about 60 languages. His major book Does God believe in Atheists?, published in 2000, was voted ‘Best Christian Book’ in the 2001 UK Christian Book Awards, and immediately became a best-seller, described as ‘a brilliant defense of belief in God’

Dr. Blanchard will also be leading the morning worship at Hyde Street Chapel on Sunday 13th at 10am. This will be followed by a fellowship lunch to which all are welcome.

Andy will also be speaking at Hyde Street Chapel on Sunday morning at 11a.m. on ‘Creation – what is the issue?’

Dr. McIntosh is Reader in Combustion Theory, Department of Fuel and Energy, University of Leeds in the United Kingdom. He holds a B.S. with first class honors in applied mathematics from the University of Wales, a Ph.D. in the theory of combustion from the Cranfield Institute of Technology, and a D.Sc. in mathematics from the University of Wales. He has contributed chapters to 10 textbooks dealing with combustion theory and published over 80 research papers. Dr. McIntosh is the author of Genesis for Today: Showing the Relevance of the Creation/Evolution Debate to Today’s Society.

This Bible exhibition has been planned to fit in with the Hyde 900 celebrations – it includes information on King Alfred’s work in translating portions of the Bible, and traces the history of the Bible through to recent times. The exhibition will be open from 2.00 p.m to 5.00 p.m on Tuesday 25th and from 10.00 a.m to 5.00 p.m every other day.

A free booklet on the life of King Alfred will be available to all who visit. There will also be talks on King Alfred by different speakers on two evenings – details to be announced soon.

Due to personal circumstances John is unable to fulfil this engagement. Professor Edgar Andrews has kindly agreed to stand in and will speak on the subject ‘Who Made God?’ This is also the title of his new book which which has received many positive reviews including this one from Robert Strivens, Principal of the London theological Seminary.
